"Using Psycolourgy allows the greatest expression of my personality. My thoughts, memories and opinions, influenced by my current social, emotional and geographical experiences, bleed into the work as each colour conjures its name. At the time of this workâs conception, I happened to be in the 2020 lockdown, with additional family members, fairly isolated, on the West Coast of Scotland.
My piece presents a subtle palette of subdued natural colours. Peaceful at first glance, much like the source artwork, but upon closer investigation, the text reveals some uneasy associations." - Nick Smith

This enduring series depicts the studios of iconic masters, from Picasso and Matisse to more contemporary artists including Kerry James Marshall and Jeff Koons. Based on deep research and often visits to the studios themselves, the viewer is transported into the heart of the creative process, and spaces where the spiritual presence of the artist can be keenly felt.

Basquiatâs Studio IV captures a specific moment in 1983 at the legendary artistâs studio on Crosby Street in SoHo, New York. Filled with biographical insights into Basquiatâs practice, we see unfinished work ( Notary, 1983 ) resting against walls and glimpses of what the artist was reading, watching and listening to at the time. Elwes and Basquiat were contemporaries at the time, and knew each other well, meeting often and even exhibiting together in the early 80âs. The television displays the Pink Panther , a popular cartoon of the time which Basquiat was particularly fond of, and his famous drawing of the defaced Mona Lisa sits atop the set. The intimacy of the work us gives the inescapable sense that Basquiat himself had momentarily stepped out of the room just moments beforeâŠ

Santa Monica-based, British artist Damian Elwes has been recreating the studios of other artists since he began painting. His work transports into the worldâs of artistic geniuses and captures the sublimity of creative experience. His work has been exhibited extensively in museums internationally, including La MusĂ©e en Herbe, Paris (2018) and The Fleming Museum, Vermont (2015), and his paintings are in the public collections of various institutions including The British Museum, London; and The Marciano Foundation, Los Angeles.
