Weâre excited to launch our partnership with artist Kenny Rivero in support of Independent Curators International (ICI)!
ART FOR CHANGE has invited artist Kenny Rivero to create a new limited edition to benefit Independent Curators International (ICI), an organization that supports the work of curators to help create stronger art communities through experimentation, collaboration, and international engagement. Riveroâs edition marks AFCâs third partnership with the organization, and will be publicly released on May 27th, 2021.
Kenny Riveroâs paintings, collages, drawings and sculptures explore the complexity of identity through narrative images, language, and symbolism. His creative process deconstructs and reimagines what he perceives as the fractured narrative of Dominican-American identity, socio-geographic solidarity, familial expectations, race, and gender roles. Born and raised in Manhattanâs Washington Heights neighborhood, Rivero has work in the public collections of The Studio Museum in Harlem; El Museo del Barrio; The Whitney Museum of American Art; Collection of Thomas J. Watson Library, The Metropolitan Museum of Art; and PĂ©rez Art Museum Miami. He is represented by Charles Moffett Gallery in New York.
Charged with fantastic symbolism, Walk Wit Me channels Riveroâs ongoing ruminations on deathâa theme that traces back to his personal upbringing in a multi-religious household guided by Catholic, Vodun and Santeria traditions. Within the work, a ghost and a suited, one-eyed figure, whose head is shrouded in a black cloth, travel down an empty sidewalk that evokes an urban landscape. Though the scene may seem morose or even menacing at first glance, the artist animates his leading male character with a bodily gesture that implicates the joy and vibrancy to be found in life.
A small number of editions will also be available for presale one day prior on May 26 at 6:30PM EDT for attendees at ICIâs Annual Independents Spring Benefit, during which the artist will join MarĂa Elena Ortiz, Curator of the PĂ©rez Art Museum Miami, for a special conversation about the new print and his larger practice.
