A new limited edition print by Caroline Coon, exclusive to House of Voltaire.
Inspired by feminism and the politics of sexual liberation, Caroline Coon (b. 1945) is a London-based artist whose works contest binary notions of gender and oppressive patriarchal values. A lifelong political activist, she has campaigned for women’s rights since the 1960s; co-founded Release in 1967, a legal advice agency for young people charged with the possession of drugs that continues today; and was central to London’s nascent punk scene, managing The Clash from 1978 to 1980.
Describing this new edition, Coon says “To me, a bathroom is a happy place of escape, both ordinary and intimate, where we can have time to wash away the cares of the world. When I was making this chalk drawing, I was thinking of soapy foam bubbles and my favourite perfume.”

L’œuvre sur céramique Portrait of the Revolutionary Woman(Portrait de la femme révolutionnaire, 2017) est la représentation, dont les traits grossiers rappellent des fils de laine, d’une femme de profil au regard déterminé et à l’air guerrier. L’estampe du même nom, datant de 2023, transpose ce portrait sur un des médiums de prédilection de l’artiste, le tissu, et fait référence à une pratique considérée culturellement comme « féminine », la broderie, pour mieux explorer la construction du rôle de la femme, de la sexualité et de l’amour dans les sociétés contemporaines.

Dans Untitled (2017), Anne Imhof peint le portrait d’une figure de trois-quart dos au corps pâle, presque maladif, longiligne et androgyne – peut-être sa compagne et muse ? – dans une ambiance lumineuse chaude et caravagesque. Dans ses cheveux, coiffés en chignon, apparaît une barrette dont l’inscription, « Now and Forever », résonne comme un memento mori, mantra rappelant la fugacité de la vie. Elle invite ainsi à parcourir l’intervalle entre vivant et non-vivant, ombre et lumière, immobilité et action, intensité et désenchantement.
L’édition limitée du même nom est un tirage digital d’encres pigmentaires ultraChrome sur Hahnemühle Museum Hetching 350g produit dans le cadre d’une collaboration entre les Éditions Dilecta et Pinault Collection et à l’occasion de l’exposition collective « Le monde comme il va » à laquelle l’artiste participe à la Bourse de Commerce jusqu’au 2 septembre 2024.

Dans Toys and a Knife, des visages noirs sous des capuches en pointe aux couleurs éclatantes semblent sur le point de sortir du cadre. Aussi séduisantes qu’elles sont terrifiantes, ces figures semblent prises dans un monde à cheval entre la réalité et le rêve, et gardent un lit sur lequel sont posés des sex toys et un couteau. Ces objets, eux-mêmes habités de créatures représentatives du travail de Pol Taburet, laissent le spectateur interrogateur quant à la scène dépeinte, entre menace et grotesque, peur et fantasme.

The posthumous release is stamped and signed by Lisane Basquiat and Jeanine Heriveaux, the artist’s sisters and administrators of the Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Odours of Punt, based on an artwork created in 1983, is an outstanding painterly example of the artist’s work incorporating his signature Xerox collage technique with paint and oilstick layering and overpainting.
The title refers to an ancient African kingdom, Punt, known as a producer and exporter of gold and aromatic resins to Egypt, which also connects to text in the work, archetypal in its enigmatic mix of popular culture and historical references.
Equal parts poet and painter, Basquiat challenged the art world binary of high and low, merging European and “primitive” through a neo-expressionist, painterly style that is nearly impossible to categorize. Recent exhibitions include “Boom For Real” at the Barbican Centre in London (2017; traveled to the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt in 2018); “Jean-Michel Basquiat” at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris (2018; traveled to the Brant Foundation in New York in 2019), “King Pleasure” at the Starrett-Lehigh Building in New York (2022; traveled to the Grand LA in Los Angeles (2023), “Seeing Loud: Basquiat and Music” at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (2022; traveled to the Paris Philharmonic in 2023), and “Basquiat. The Modena Paintings” at the Fondation Beyeler, Basel, Switzerland (2023).
