To mark the return of the Olympic Games to Paris after a century, Atelier JR is pleased to present JRâs latest limited edition. The striking visual captures the elegant movement of an athlete in mid-leap, defying the forces of gravity.
JR began his Giants series as an artist-in-residence at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. He photographed lesser-known athletes who had trained for years to achieve their Olympic dreams, capturing the beauty in their precise and extraordinary athletic gestures. He installed their images on site-specific scaffolding, freeing himself from the constraints of walls and introducing intricate sculptural elements to his public works.
For Rising Up, JR drew inspiration from Hong Kongâs distinctive architectural craftsmanship, incorporating bamboo scaffolding for the first time. True to the essence of the Giants series, this work transcends the cityâs scale. The piece captures an athlete soaring above the skyline, her body poised to descend gracefully into Victoria Harbor.
