“Humans begins in a mob”
The radical grouping of Nina Ghafari, Søstrene G, Wan Ho and Massarati.

Taken from the lyrics of a Kanye West track of the same name, that violently challenges the ruling classes cultural hegemony. No Church In Tha Wild, the exhibition, sets out to question and challenge those same entrenched power structures in the art world. Who gets to decide who’s an “artist”, why and more importantly when?, who get’s to decide what is “good” or “relevant” art and what isn’t. The state? The arts education system? State institution curators and directors?

The politics of art is not only fought out by the government ministers, art councils, cultural boards and arts institutions, but also in the language we use, the stories we tell, and the images we conjure to tell them in independent art spaces.

Cultural hegemony describes the domination of a culturally diverse society by the ruling class, who manipulate the culture of that society - the beliefs, explanations, perceptions, values and mores - so that their worldview becomes the worldview that is imposed and accepted as the cultural norm; as the universally valid dominant ideology that justifies the social, political, economic and even aesthetic status quo as natural, inevitable, perpetual and beneficial for everyone, rather than as artificial social constructs that benefit only those in positions of power.

No culture, however, is completely hegemonic. Even under the most complete systems of control, there are pockets of “counter-hegemonic” cultures: ways of thinking and doing that have revolutionary potential within their field because they run counter to the dominant power. No Church in Tha Wild sets out provide a clue as to what this counter culture might smell, feel and look like.

As Dr Martin Luther King Jr once said “human salvation” “lies in the hands of the creatively maladjusted”
